Welcome to EDUC 643: Critical Ethnography in Education

Welcome to CSUSM's EDUC 643: Critical Ethnography in Education.
This is a hybrid course, where part of the sessions will be face-to-face (F2F) and some will be online. For the sessions online, you will be able to explore course content asynchronized, at the same time as your classmates. You will not be required to do online activities during class hours (synchronized), Wednesday 5:30-8:15 pm, but you will be required to do the set activities prior to our next F2F class session. This course is designed to fit maximize your learning and fit your busy schedule.

There are three main assignments:

Reading Responses (30 total = 30 points)
The Reading Responses are intended to guide your reading and help you master the content. Use your skimming skills to find the key part of the reading and respond.

Ethnographic Research (20 points)
The Ethnographic Research Assignment is to help you practice ethnography with a small team. We will go over the assignment in class to prepare for the data collection. Then we will bring the data to class for the analysis, interpretation and representation.

Choice Assignment (50 points)
The Choice Assignment, is just that, your choice. You will have the opportunity to chose an activity that you can incorporate ethnography and arts-based inquiry. Chose something that you are already doing this semester, double dip. Apply the ethnographic/arts-based inquiry to your thesis/project, a curriculum you are creating, or an assignment for another class.

To share your assignments, start a blog.
Go to BLOGGER, create an account and start your own blog.
Use this blog to post your reading reflections and share links to your Ethnographic Research or Choice Assignment. I suggest that you use Google Docs for your work. This will enable you to share it with classmates and have your peer writer edit your Choice Assignment Drafts. If you need assistance go to the PLN Tools Tab.
